Fr. Clarence Sandoval is our parish priest. His weekly letter follows:

Dear Parish Family:

In Ecuador, outside the capital city Guayaquil, there is a slum city built on mud and muck. The houses are made of cardboard, corrugated tin and some wood. The only sanitation is an open drainage ditch running in front of the hovels. The people who live there do not officially exist. The government does not record them on their census. They have no rights, no influence, no way out. Since they are squatters, the government has come without notice with bulldozers and plowed under the entire slum city. They are helpless. Yet these people have little option but to repeat the process: building as squatters on other land that may be bulldozed. The poor are throwaway people, the powerless, the Anawin.

Who are the throwaway people in our lives, in our community? Who would like to put in a corner and forget? Who is dispensable? More trouble than they are worth? Each reading today says that everyone is needed. Each person and function is important in the Body of Christ.
